Gran's Story - Mixed Emotions

Friday, March 31st, 2006 was a day of mixed emotions for us all. First the immediate family met for a Committal Service at Ipswich Crematorium which was a very sad occasion. Later Gran’s ashes were interred in the Garden of Rest.

In the afternoon a Service of Thanksgiving was held in Charsfield Baptist Chapel where Gran had been a member for 70 years. I am sure Gran would have felt very humbled had she known that over 100 people attended to pay their respects and to thank God for her life.

Gran had asked that Pastor Jim Hopkins should conduct the service and she had chosen three hymns and a Bible reading from the Psalms.

The family tribute was given by son-in-law Don who finished by saying:

“Those of you who visited Gran will remember that when asked ‘How are you today’, Gran would always answer ‘I am perfectly alright, thank you’. Strictly speaking this was not always quite true. However, if we could ask her the same question today she could truthfully say ‘I am perfectly alright, thank you’, because we know that she is now with Christ which, as the Bible says, is far better”.

At Gran’s request there were no floral tributes (apart from one from the immediate family). Gran had asked that donations be given to the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice. We all felt this was most appropriate and reflected her love of children.

The day concluded  with a time of fellowship with family and friends while we enjoyed refreshments which were kindly provided by the ladies at the Chapel.

Truly a day of sadness but also a day of thanksgiving.
