Recorded on the Pettaugh History Web Site:

Ernest Cousins (3/4/1925 to 27/7/2011)

It is with sadness that we learnt that Ernest Cousins recently passed away. Ernest was the eldest son of Ben and Violet Cousins. He was born in the family home in Ipswich Way in Pettaugh. Ernest had four brothers, Leonard, Donald, Cecil and Rex. He attended the primary school in Pettaugh and then the secondary school in Stonham Aspal. After leaving school he worked in Ipswich for the engineering firm of Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies. At the age of 19, Ernest trained for service in the Church Army and worked in the Ely area before being posted to the West Indies where he met his wife, Monica, marrying in 1977. After working for the Church Army in the West Indies for about fifty years, Ernest and Monica retired to Sedbergh in Cumbria. We interviewed Ernest in August 2008 to record his memories while he was visiting his brother Cecil in Ipswich and were impressed with his remarkable recall of events and store of anecdotes. He recounted his early years in Pettaugh with great charm and frequent bursts of laughter. Although he loved school he described himself as being ‘a bit rebellious’ which meant that he occasionally felt Miss Banham’s ruler applied to his legs. He sang in the church choir and was one of the first members of the ‘Better Britain Brigade’ and the Pettaugh Band. The influence of the church and the Cutting family clearly played a role in his decision to join the Church Army.
