Ruby and Roy were put in foster care at age nine
I was actually in the car and I have the newspaper article concerning the wreck. It was actually a bread truck, we had run out of gas and Daddy had a gas can in his hand and was trying to flag someone for a ride to the gas station. The driver was drunk and ran over the car, snagging Daddy by the neck with his bumper and dragging him for yards and yards. Mother was pregnant (she was always pregnant, I think) and my younger brother was in her lap in the front seat. Roy, Joyce, my mother's mother and I were in the backseat with a huge jug of water for drinking. The driver ran over the car smashing it in and nearly killed all of us. It was our worst nightmare and the day that changed my life forever. E-Mail from Ruby Pender [Sturdevant] - October 17th 2005

Was adopted by an uncle when she was a baby and it wasn't known at that time that she was severly retarded. After the death of Lola, Lois would harm Uncle Othie. He finally placed her in a home. Aunt Moody, his half sister helped him place her in a home for retarded people.
