Taken from My Village Stonham Aspal - Part Two by Mrs. G D Spall - 1989

Mr. Jim Cousins

Mrs. Eva Cousins' husband, Jim, was the village postman for 35 years and a memorable character.

An entry in the School Punishment book in 1906 reads "James Cousins was caned one stroke on each hand for putting a wasp down another boy's neck. A minute later he had 3 strokes on his buttocks for impudence." The irrepressible schoolboy was always playing pranks - putting a hedgehog in Mr. Cooper's desk: playing truant for days on end while his mother assumed he was in school, bathing in Halls Garden Pond against his father's orders and emerging to find his father had removed his clothes, so having to run home naked to Pump Alley: getting caned at school so regularly he took to wearing his buskins [A foot and leg covering reaching halfway to the knee, resembling a laced half boot] in the seat of his trousers.

The village policcman, P.C. Bird, promoted to Halesworth, remembered him well when we met him by chance before we moved. "Jim Cousins is too old for school now so he won't give you as much trouble as he gave me." He probably had a painful recollection of the time when, searching for the lad after some misdemeanour, he was stooping to peer through the hedge opposite Old Pump House when Jim, unable to resist the temptation, crept up behind him with a stick and raced off.

In the 1914-18 war he was gassed and his lungs were affected but he remained cheerful and loved pulling people's legs. He worked as butcher's assistant, rectory gardener and postman whistling and singing on his delivery round.
In later years he could be found tending his dahlias, walking with his dog, or entertaining [The Ten] Bells regulars with his stories. He died on November 14th 1983 aged 89, one of our most popular village personalities.
